What to expect at your 20-week anatomy scan

The 20-week anatomy scan (also called the mid-pregnancy ultrasound or level 2 ultrasound) is one of the most significant appointments of your pregnancy. It typically takes 30–60 minutes and involves a detailed examination of your baby's brain, spine, heart, kidneys, limbs, face, and abdominal organs, as well as the placenta location and amniotic fluid levels. The sonographer will take many measurements and images, and the appointment often includes your first clear look at your baby's features.

If you want to know the sex, this is typically when you'll find out (though it's not always possible to determine depending on baby's position). Soft markers for chromosomal differences may be noted, which can prompt further discussion or testing — try not to panic if additional follow-up is recommended, as many soft markers resolve on their own.
