Varicose veins during pregnancy

Varicose veins — swollen, raised veins most commonly appearing on the legs — affect up to 40% of pregnant women. Pregnancy increases blood volume significantly and the growing uterus puts pressure on the large vein (inferior vena cava) that carries blood back from your lower body, causing veins to bulge. Genetics plays a large role; if your mother had them, your risk is higher.

Compression stockings worn from morning are the most effective prevention and management tool. Regular walking and avoiding long periods of standing or sitting help, as does elevating your legs when possible. Most varicose veins improve significantly within three months of delivery, though they rarely disappear entirely.
