Swollen feet and ankles during pregnancy

Mild swelling (edema) in the feet and ankles is one of the most universal pregnancy experiences, affecting about 75% of women. Your body produces roughly 50% more blood and fluid during pregnancy, and as the uterus grows it puts pressure on the veins returning blood from your legs, causing fluid to pool. Heat, prolonged standing, and end-of-day fatigue all make it worse.

Elevating your feet whenever possible, wearing compression socks, staying well hydrated (counter-intuitively, more water helps flush retained fluid), and avoiding long periods of sitting or standing all help. Sudden swelling in your face or hands, or swelling accompanied by headache or vision changes, should be reported to your provider promptly.
