Pregnancy-safe skincare: what to avoid and what to use

Several common skincare ingredients are best avoided during pregnancy due to potential risks, even though the evidence varies in strength. The ones most consistently recommended to avoid: retinoids and retinol (vitamin A derivatives linked to birth defects at high doses), high-dose salicylic acid in leave-on products, hydroquinone (skin-lightening agent with high absorption), chemical sunscreens containing oxybenzone, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. What's safe and effective: mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide), vitamin C serum, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, azelaic acid (great for melasma and acne), and gentle glycolic acid in rinse-off products.

When in doubt, ask your OB or check your specific products through the EWG Skin Deep database.
