What to expect from postpartum recovery

Preparing mentally and practically for the postpartum recovery period is just as important as preparing for labor. In the first days and weeks: expect significant vaginal bleeding (lochia) for 4–6 weeks, soreness whether you had a vaginal or cesarean birth, engorgement and nipple sensitivity if breastfeeding, night sweats as hormones shift, and a wide range of emotions. Prepare your recovery space before your due date: stock your bathroom with witch hazel pads, a peri bottle, stool softener, heavy-flow pads, and comfortable underwear.

Line up support in advance — someone to handle meals, laundry, and older children so you can focus on resting and feeding your baby. The first two weeks especially are not the time to push through.
