Pelvic pressure and heaviness in the third trimester

A persistent feeling of heaviness, pressure, or even the sensation that 'something is falling out' is common in the third trimester as your baby descends into the pelvis in preparation for birth. The baby's head (or presenting part) puts direct pressure on your bladder, pelvic floor, and cervix, which can make walking uncomfortable and trips to the bathroom even more frequent. A maternity support belt can help redistribute some of the weight.

Pelvic floor exercises (Kegels) done consistently throughout pregnancy strengthen the muscles that bear this load and support a faster postpartum recovery. If the pressure is sudden or severe, or accompanied by spotting or fluid, call your provider.
