Nursery essentials: what you actually need vs. nice to have
The baby products industry is very good at making everything seem essential. The true essentials for a functioning nursery are: a safe sleep surface (crib, bassinet, or play yard with a firm insert), fitted sheets, a changing pad with a waterproof cover, a good supply of diapers and wipes, a dresser or storage for clothes, and a white noise machine. Nice-to-have but not essential: a dedicated glider or nursing chair (comfortable seating anywhere works), a wipe warmer, a diaper pail, and an elaborate monitor.
Skip entirely in the newborn stage: crib bumpers (unsafe), positioners or wedges, and most battery-operated soothing devices. Set up the nursery by week 36 so you're not rushing it, and wash all baby clothes and linens before use.
