Newborn feeding basics: breastfeeding, pumping, and formula

Feeding decisions are deeply personal and often evolve after birth — going in with a flexible mindset helps. If breastfeeding: newborns feed 8–12 times per day in the early weeks, on demand rather than on a schedule. Latching correctly from the start makes a significant difference — consider a prenatal breastfeeding class or consultation with a lactation consultant before your due date.

If pumping: research your insurance's breast pump coverage (most plans in the US cover one pump entirely) and order before birth. If formula-feeding or supplementing: research formulas in advance and have one on hand before delivery. Whatever your plan, pediatricians universally support fed-is-best — a thriving, growing baby is the goal.
