The nesting instinct in pregnancy: what it is and when it happens

Nesting — the overwhelming urge to clean, organize, and prepare your home for your baby's arrival — is a well-documented phenomenon that typically peaks in the third trimester, often in the weeks just before labor. Many women describe it as a sudden surge of energy and motivation after the fatigue of late pregnancy, combined with a powerful drive to have everything in order. It can manifest as deep-cleaning, reorganizing drawers, painting the nursery, or batch-cooking freezer meals.

While nesting energy is genuinely useful for getting ready, be mindful of overdoing it physically — particularly climbing ladders, moving heavy furniture, or using harsh cleaning chemicals. Some researchers believe an unusually intense nesting surge very close to your due date may signal that labor is approaching.
