Mood swings and emotional changes in the first trimester

The emotional intensity of early pregnancy catches many women off guard. Rapidly shifting levels of estrogen and progesterone directly affect neurotransmitter activity, which is why you might find yourself crying at a commercial, irritable for no apparent reason, or swinging between excitement and anxiety multiple times in a single day. This is genuinely hormonal — not a reflection of how ready or capable you are.

Most mood instability eases as hormones stabilize in the second trimester. Be honest with your support person about what you're experiencing. Persistent sadness, hopelessness, or anxiety that doesn't lift should be discussed with your provider — prenatal depression and anxiety are common and very treatable.
