Pregnancy insomnia: why you can't sleep and what helps

Insomnia affects up to 75% of pregnant women at some point and is caused by a perfect storm of physical and hormonal factors: a growing belly that makes finding a comfortable position increasingly difficult, frequent urination interrupting sleep, hormonal fluctuations that disrupt sleep architecture, heightened anxiety about birth and parenthood, and vivid pregnancy dreams. A pregnancy pillow (particularly a full-body or C-shaped pillow) is one of the most effective investments for physical comfort. Limiting screen time before bed, keeping a consistent sleep schedule, and a short walk in the evening to tire yourself out physically all help.

Avoid sleeping on your back after week 20 — left-side sleeping improves circulation to the placenta.
