Hospital bag checklist: what to pack for labor and delivery

Most providers recommend having your hospital bag packed by week 36 — earlier if you have a high-risk pregnancy. For mom: ID and insurance cards, your birth plan, comfortable labor socks with grip, a hair tie, chapstick, snacks for early labor, a loose going-home outfit, toiletries, and a phone charger. For baby: an infant car seat (installed before you leave), a going-home outfit in newborn and 0–3 month sizes, a swaddle blanket, and a hat.

For your support person: a change of clothes, snacks, entertainment, and any comfort items you've discussed for your birth preferences. Many hospitals provide most of what you need during your stay — the bag is really for the transition home.
