Safe heartburn remedies to use during pregnancy

Heartburn is one of the most common discomforts of pregnancy and can range from mildly annoying to seriously disruptive to sleep and daily life. For dietary management: eat smaller meals, stay upright for at least an hour after eating, avoid trigger foods (fatty, spicy, acidic, chocolate, mint), and don't eat within two hours of bedtime. Elevating the head of your bed by a few inches can dramatically reduce nighttime reflux.

For medication: calcium carbonate antacids (like Tums) are considered safe and have the added benefit of providing calcium. Avoid antacids containing aluminum or high doses of sodium bicarbonate. If over-the-counter remedies aren't enough, speak with your provider about prescription options — there are safe choices available.
