Heartburn and acid reflux during pregnancy

Heartburn is extremely common in pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, and has two main causes: progesterone relaxes the valve between your esophagus and stomach (allowing acid to escape more easily), and your growing uterus physically pushes your stomach upward. Eating smaller, more frequent meals rather than large ones, staying upright for at least an hour after eating, avoiding spicy, fatty, or acidic foods, and not eating within two hours of bedtime are the most effective lifestyle strategies. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated can also help.

Most OTC antacids are considered safe in pregnancy — check with your provider for their recommended brand.
