Headaches during pregnancy: causes and safe relief
Headaches are common in early pregnancy and are largely driven by surging hormones, increased blood volume, and changes in blood pressure. Dehydration, low blood sugar, poor sleep, and stress are the most common triggers throughout pregnancy. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) in recommended doses is generally considered safe for occasional use — ibuprofen and aspirin should be avoided.
Non-medication relief includes drinking water, eating something, resting in a dark quiet room, a cold cloth on the forehead, and gentle neck stretches. Headaches in the third trimester — especially severe ones, or those accompanied by visual changes, swelling in the face and hands, or upper abdominal pain — can be a sign of preeclampsia and warrant immediate contact with your provider.
