Eating for two during pregnancy: what actually changes
The 'eating for two' idea is one of the most persistent pregnancy myths — and believing it can lead to excessive weight gain that increases risks for both you and your baby. In reality, caloric needs in the first trimester barely change at all. In the second trimester, you need approximately 340 extra calories per day above your pre-pregnancy baseline, and in the third trimester, about 450 extra calories.
That's roughly the equivalent of an apple with peanut butter and a glass of milk — not a second meal. What matters far more than quantity is quality: a baby needs more nutrients but not dramatically more calories. Recommended total weight gain depends on your pre-pregnancy BMI and is a conversation worth having with your provider early.
