Diastasis recti during and after pregnancy
Diastasis recti — the partial or complete separation of the rectus abdominis muscles along the midline of the abdomen — is estimated to affect up to 60% of pregnant women, most commonly in the third trimester as the uterus grows. It often presents as a visible ridge or 'coning' down the center of the abdomen when engaging the core. Mild separation is normal and often resolves on its own postpartum.
During pregnancy, certain exercises — particularly traditional crunches, sit-ups, heavy lifting with breath-holding, and some yoga poses — can worsen the separation and are best modified or avoided. A pelvic floor physiotherapist can assess the degree of separation and guide you through safe rehabilitation exercises, both during pregnancy and postpartum.
