Colostrum harvesting before birth: what it is and who it's for
Colostrum — the thick, nutrient-dense first milk produced by the breasts — begins forming as early as 16 weeks of pregnancy. Antenatal colostrum harvesting involves hand-expressing and collecting small amounts of colostrum in the final weeks before birth to have a stored supply for your newborn. It's not standard recommendation for all women, but is often specifically suggested for those with diabetes (whose babies are at higher risk of low blood sugar), those planning a cesarean, or those who anticipate difficulty with initial breastfeeding.
It's generally considered safe after 36 weeks in an uncomplicated pregnancy and should be discussed with your midwife or OB before starting. Collected colostrum is stored in tiny syringes and can be brought to the hospital for immediate use after birth.
