Carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy

Tingling, numbness, and aching in the hands and wrists — particularly at night or upon waking — affects roughly 60% of pregnant women and is caused by fluid retention compressing the median nerve in the wrist. It often affects both hands and can be surprisingly disruptive to sleep. Wearing wrist splints at night is the most consistently effective treatment and can provide dramatic relief.

Avoiding repetitive wrist motions, taking breaks from keyboard or phone use, and elevating your hands above your heart when possible all help. For most women, symptoms resolve completely within a few weeks after delivery once fluid levels normalize. If symptoms are severe, a physiotherapist or OB can advise on additional options.
