Breast tenderness and changes in the first trimester

Breast tenderness is often one of the very first signs of pregnancy — sometimes even before a missed period. Rising levels of estrogen and progesterone cause increased blood flow and tissue growth in preparation for nursing, which can make your breasts feel sore, heavy, or tingly. For many women this peaks around weeks 6–8 and gradually eases by the second trimester.

A well-fitting, supportive bra (even to sleep in) makes a significant difference. You may also notice your areolas darkening and small bumps called Montgomery glands becoming more visible — all normal changes.
