Braxton Hicks contractions: what they feel like and when they start

Braxton Hicks are irregular, painless tightening sensations in your uterus — often described as a brief hardening across your belly — that most women begin noticing in the second trimester, though they can start as early as week 6. They're your uterus 'practicing' for labor and are completely normal. Unlike true labor contractions, Braxton Hicks don't follow a regular pattern, don't get progressively stronger or closer together, and usually stop when you change activity or drink water.

Dehydration, a full bladder, sexual activity, and physical exertion are common triggers. If contractions become rhythmic, painful, or are accompanied by back pain or fluid, contact your provider.
