Bassinet vs. crib for a newborn: which do you actually need

Both are safe sleep options for newborns when used correctly, but they serve different purposes. A bassinet is smaller, portable, and designed to be next to your bed — making night feeds significantly easier in the early weeks. Most bassinets are only safe until around 4–6 months or when baby can push up on their hands and knees.

A crib is a longer-term investment that typically lasts until age 2–3. The most practical approach for most families is to use a bassinet in your bedroom for the first few months, then transition to a crib in the nursery. If space or budget is a constraint, a convertible mini-crib can serve both purposes.

Regardless of which you choose, always follow safe sleep guidelines: firm, flat surface, no loose bedding.
